Legendary character Inspector John Appleby of Scotland Yard inspired a lasting vogue for donnish detective fiction. Innes’s detective novels are playfully highbrow and rich in allusions to English literature and to Renaissance art. Between 1936 and 1986, J.I.M Stewart , writing under the pseudonym of Michael Innes , published nearly fifty crime novels and short story collections.

In 1939 Scotland, two people stumble onto a Nazi plot to track down and kidnap a British scientist. Part of the story takes place on a train heading up into the Scottish Highlands. The story actually begins in England, with the murder, in a gazebo, of the harmless English poet, Mr. Philip Ploss.
