Driven in part by financial pressures, they accept a job investigating the kidnapping of a wealthy family’s child. Tregear moves smoothly among British accents reflective of the social classes and attitudes held by household members and staff, constables, and other characters. Plausible motives and antagonistic behavior from everyone involved confound the sleuths, as do the tangles of their romantic lives.
